When you’ve been trying to get it to fit all day only to realize you actually need a 12" shaft. Damn.
I finally started to swap the transmission on my ‘66 GMC. I picked up a rebuilt TH350 from Hughs Performance for dirt cheap. Like, almost free cheap. I got a the TH350, spare running SBC 350 with aftermarket lightweight pullies, a new Hughs TC, a new engine stand, silicon rad hoses, new ss fuel lines, new roller rockers, new valve covers, flex plate, a free haircut, and an Arturo Fuente cigar for $700. Well, I didn’t check the tailshaft length on the new transmission and it is 3" shorter than the old one. It looks like the one I orginially had on there was too short too.
The problem now is that I have a longbed, and there aren’t any longer driveshafts available for cheap. The proper solution is to uave my driveshaft cut and lengthened. The cheap solution it to buy a longer yoke. The awesome solution would be to cut my truck down, move the rear axle up, and make it into a flat bed rat rod. Decisions, decisions.

The solution is stubby:

I actually use mine as a pickup, so I won’t go that short, but I might chop her up a bit.

Flat bed rat rod gets my vote.
I wish I’d had an Arturo Fuente instead of the blah Hoyo de Monterey stick I smoked this afternoon. I tossed it halfway through because it was just so bland.

Little awesome anectodote about Arturo Fuente. My wife bought a box of short stories for me and when the guy rang it up the price was only for one cigar. He didn’t say anything, we didn’t say anything, and now I’m enjoying a Short Story. It was a big chain, not a mom and pop job.

you might measure, and see if you can find a reasonably close factory one.
bury the shaft of the yolk into the trans, then pull it back out about an inch and measure from u-joint to u-joint. i had noticed that you were putting a shorter tail trans in your last post, but thought you knew already. long tail to medium tail.
i know a lot of these, and the 67-72 with the trailing arm rear suspension ran two piece driveshafts, with carrier bearings.
do you know what the driveshaft that was in the truck came out of?

I have a longbed driveshaft in it, so I’m not sure if there’s a factory one that’s longer. It looks to me like the 9" tail was even too short as it looks like there was 2" of yoke shaft showing. I’m thinking the driveshaft was for a longbed with a 12" tailshaft which is a very rare combo. I guess I could check around some yards and look for a longer driveshaft.

there SHOULD be a factory one to fit. measure it first. if i’m not mistaken, the turbo350 shares the same output shaft with the 700r4.
you might check the suburbans too(i think the wheelbase is SLIGHTLY longer(129.5) than a longbed (127) 0
ALSO..........(probably tired of hearing from me by now).......... there is an EVEN shorter version of the turbo350. i had to find one those for my blazer, and cut the shaft down. i found a picture for you too. so you SHOULD be able to find a slightly longer shaft, somewhere. 0
Thanks for the info! I’ll measure it tomorrow and see where I’m at. 1
My go-to shop keeps putting new 10-packs of my favorite cigar (My Uzi Weighs a Ton) in the singles bin with a sticker on it that only shows the single stick price. It’s very hard for me to keep from bringing it to the checkout.
